Spyware
Spyware is a type of malicious software that attaches itself to your computer and performs certain tasks without your consent–and often, without your knowledge. Such unwelcome tasks can include collecting certain information about you and passing it along to a third party, as well as presenting you with unsolicited advertisements.
Unlike computer viruses and worms, spyware is not usually designed to self-replicate. Instead, it is designed to exploit and manipulate computers for the purpose of financial gain. Often, this is accomplished through the use of pop-up ads, the theft of private information, monitoring internet habits for advertising purposes, and re-routing HTTP requests to certain commercial websites.
Spyware can gain access to computers in several different ways. Often, the computer user unintentionally installs it, thinking it is another application. Some spyware actually deceives the user into thinking it is a completely different (and useful) program, making the user more likely to install it. Other spyware programs gain access by latching onto a desirable application.
Often, computers affected by spyware begin to function abnormally. In fact, function is often so impaired that the user begins to think the computer has a virus. Once the user learns that spyware is actually at fault, he or she typically attempts to use a syware–removal program. Unfortunately, though such programs can be helpful for removing some spyware programs, they all too often fail to remove the most damaging ones. For expert help with removing stubborn spyware.
